In this lesson, students will read and talk about balanced diets and learn how to interpret the nutritional information tables on food packaging. As a result, students will be more able to make healthier food choices when food shopping.

Teachers’ notes

Topic: Eating a balanced diet and understanding nutritional information on food packaging

Aims:

To develop students’ ability to speed read;
To develop students’ ability to talk about balanced diet;
To expand students’ vocabulary for describing what food contains;
To help students read nutritional information on food packaging.

Time: 90 minutes

Tip – bring a multi-pack of small breakfast cereal boxes (empty or full) to the class. Encourage students to bring in their own empty food packaging in advance for the final task.

Introduction
This is a reading, speaking and vocabulary lesson based on the topics of balanced diets and nutritional information on food packaging. As a result, students will be more able to make healthier food choices when out shopping. The reading texts can be accessed from the NHS Choices website:
