This lesson is based on a video entitled: A brief history of melancholy. It looks at how beliefs about the causes of depression have changed over time. Exercises look at vocabulary for talking about different emotions and vocabulary related to the video. Students will order text from the script and use the video and the script as a basis for reading and listening comprehension (by Joe Wilson).
Note: This lesson looks at depression from an educational and historical perspective. However, there are questions that take a more personal approach, which some students may be uncomfortable with answering. Ensure the atmosphere is supportive and make it clear to students that they don’t have to discuss anything of a personal nature that they are not comfortable sharing.
