In this updated lesson plan, students identify some male face and hair features and grooming items before listening to an interview about one man’s grooming routines. The language point is have/get something done. There is an opportunity to practice this language in controlled exercises and to activate the grammar and vocabulary in a roleplay. The lesson also includes an optional wordsearch activity related to more grooming items (by Stephanie Hirschman).

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Journalist: This is Channel 3 News - as part of our series on men’s grooming, we’re here at the train station to talk to some men about their morning routines. I see a gentleman coming along here, so let’s ask him to explain how he manages to look so good! Excuse me, sir. Do you have a couple of minutes to answer a few questions for Channel 3 News?
Man: OK, I guess so.
Journalist: We’d like to know how you got ready this morning. Can you tell us about your routine?
Man: I always take (have) a shower. Next, I brush my teeth. … Then, I put shaving gel on my face and shave.
Journalist: Do you use aftershave?
Man: Sometimes, but I didn’t put any on today. Once I finish shaving, I trim my mustache. … And then I style my hair and put on deodorant. … Oh, and this morning, I also cut my nails.
Journalist: Well, you’re looking very nice (smart), I must say. Can I ask you about how you’d get ready for a special occasion?
Man: Actually, I’m going to a wedding this weekend, so I’m planning to visit the barber on Friday.
Journalist: What are you going to ask the barber to do?
Man: I’m going to have my hair cut, of course. I think I’ll just ask him to take a little off the top, and then I’ll have short back and sides.
Journalist: Sounds good. Is that all?
Man: Oh no! I’m going for a new look - I’m having my mustache shaved off, and I’ll also get my eyebrows shaped and my ear hair removed. That just doesn’t look good, does it?
Journalist: Do you enjoy visiting the barber?
Man: Oh yes. The barber gives a much closer shave than I get at home. They use a shaving brush and hot towels. It’s a real treat, and I feel great afterward(s). Plus, I enjoy chatting with the barber and the other customers.
Journalist: Do you think men today are spending (taking) more time on their appearance than in the past?
Man: Absolutely. Lots of my friends go for manicures and facials, and a couple of them even get their hair dyed so they look younger.
Journalist: That’s really interesting. Thanks so much for talking to us. Hope you enjoy the wedding this weekend. Back to the studio.
